Walking On The Moon by IMMages Walking On The Moon by IMMages
I wanted to do something as a sort of companion piece to my Batman Rogues pinup from a long time ago, with Superman. I've been so busy over the past several months that I haven't had the time to make anything just for fun, and Superman is my favorite thing to draw. I was also really inspired by the recent trailer for "Man Of Steel" that was played at SDCC.

I'm always playing around with Superman's suit. A lot of times, I'll approach it with a bit more of a utilitarian look to it, using seam lines and boot straps and whatnot. This time I wanted to embrace the idea that it has a Kryptonian origin. It's largely inspired by the design of the suit from the movie, but I wanted to ad red to the midsection. Not briefs, but more of a color accent that runs down the inside leg a bit and up the waist a little. With the "S" I usually go for something a little more traditional, but I wanted something that could be an "alien" symbol mistaken for a stylized "S", rather than what is clearly a terrestrial "S" from the roman alphabet.

Finally, I wanted this to be a visual representation of Superman with "the world on his shoulders", but in a subtle way. Also, I think it's cool that Superman can just go chill out in space for a while if he wants. It's a bit dark, but that's because the main light source is behind him.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Oh! And also extra applause for giving Supes a far-more normal physique than the muscled-out brutes others render. Kal's strength is only "super" by our standards, not those of Krypton.

Thank you! Yeah, I've never been a fan of hulked-out Superman. His strength doesn't come from his muscles, it comes from the sun. Also, if he were THAT big, how could he blend in when he's wearing a three piece?

You see how close to the surface a bulked up Supes has to play it, in WB's Superman cartoon show from a couple years back. That's a scenario where literally the only thing different between Superman and Clark Kent is the hairstyle and the glasses. Is everyone really supposed to believe that a dude striding around, at six-four with the neck and shoulders of Atlas is a simpering wimp?

Exactly. I'm really curious to see hoe they're going to habdle it in "Man Of Steel". Because the other aspect of it is that Superman is a really handsome guy. And I hardly think someone who looks like Henry Cavill could walk around an office under the radar, lol.

A good effort-- well explained-- all round. And good on you for putting the red "trunks" back in. it just isn't Superman's outfit without that high-contrast splash of red, right there.

The suit design is clever as hell. On first glance I wondered why you had kept the red trunks, but in looking at it more I see what you did. It's very slick.

It's a nice blend of the original suit and the Man of Steel one.

Thank you. Yeah, the Man Of Steel look was very close to the direction I've gone in when redesigning the suit in the past, so I definitely incorporated a lot of it into this one.

I really like your thoughts behind this artwork, particularly the "S" being more alien and not just straight from the alphabet. Great premise and artwork!

Interesting... While I cannot stand red around his crotch, if I block it out in my mind I can really enjoy this! :D Great job on the S and every thing else not regarding the area around his groin area.
